China Internet Conference 2004 (Internet 2004 for short) and Asia-Pacific Digital Technology Expo (Digital 2004 for short) hosted by Internet Society of China (ISC) was held in Beijing from September 1st to September 3rd, 2004. With support of leaders from Ministry of Information Industry (MII) of People's Republic of China and members of ISC, the Conference reached a great success. At the 10th anniversary of Internet in China and in welcoming the new opportunities for development, under the theme of 'Building a Prosperous and Trusted Internet', following the principles of 'Taking Opportunities for Innovation and Development, Making Practical Cooperation', the Conference explored deep into the developments, industrial patterns and market changes in China's Internet over the past ten years, which provided a comprehensive understanding of technological trends in application and opportunities for cooperation and development for China's Internet industry in the coming ten years.
At the Conference's opening ceremony, minister of MII Wang Xudong delivered the congratulatory letter from Huang Ju, standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, vice premier of the State Council. Chairman of China Association for Science and Technology Zhou Guangzhao and relevant government officials attended the Conference and addressed to this great event: vice minister of MII Xi Guohua gave a theme report with the title of 'Guiding China Internet's Healthy & Harmonious Development with the Philosophy of the Science Development', in which he introduced the policies on developing the Internet industrial. Focusing on the present situation, character, existed problems and the next management concept of China's Internet development, Director of Telecommunication Administration Bureau of MII Su Jinsheng also gave a theme report with the title of 'Grasping the Development Trend of Internet, Building a Prosperous and Trusted Internet'.Finally, on behalf of ISC, chairman of ISC Madam Hu Qiheng expressed the great gratitude to people from all walks of life for their concern and support to ISC and Internet industry, to relevant departments of government, mass media and Internet enterprises' help and support to the Conference.
Concerning the Conference themes of 'Infrastructure Construction for Internet Information Technology', 'the Internet Industry and Its Application and Development'and 'Technology-driven Business Innovation', officials from government departments such as Beijing Informatization Office and representatives of well-known enterprises made a speech and put forward advice related to these issues.
The Conference was composed of seven forums, which included Anti-Spam Forum of China, Asia-Pacific Digital Entertainment Summit, China Internet Application Forum, China Internet Security Forum, China Internet Technology Forum, Annual Meeting for China's Internet Capital and China's Internet High-level Summit. Regarding to various problems raised in the process of China Internet's development, front-line topic of respective fields, focus on Internet industry and typical cases, hundreds of officials, experts and entrepreneurs both from home and abroad exchanged their idea and made suggestions with forward-looking and revelatory concern.
China Science Popularization Alliance was founded and the Conference performed an activity called Healthy Online for Teenagers on September 3rd. Vice minister Jiang Yaoping of MII and officials from the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China and Women's Federation attended the activity and gave a speech. The Alliance would take its responsibility to popularize science knowledge and facilitate the construction of science popularization network by set up certain websites related to these issue. Aiming at facilitating the teenagers' healthy growth and sustainable development of China's Internet industry, the content of Activity included recommendation of Internet software and positive guide for teenagers to access to and use Internet, especially a guide for them to visit healthy websites to obtain knowledge.
A noteworthy point was that the Internet industry and top enterprises participated in the Conference in an all-round way. It maximized the principle that the Internet Conference was an assembly for people involved in Internet industry. There were about 3500 people participated in the Conference and about 10000 people came to the Digital 2004 during the three days, which reached a higher scale and status compared to last year's Conference.
The Conference' great success was also attributed to the full support from mass media that nearly 100 international and local core media focused on the Conference. Ten well-known websites (People.com.cn, Xinhuanet.com, China.com.cn, Sina.com.cn, Sohu.com, 163.com, 163.net, PCIK.com.cn, ccidnet.com, Yesky.com) broadcasted the whole Conference online with living video and character. The press and Internet news media released 402 news reports accounting to million words. Meanwhile, more over 30 leading websites built a special column for the Conference.
People from all walks of life gave a high praise to the successful holding the 2004 Conference that had made great approach to be more authoritative, influential, higher participated rate, exchanged valuation and internationalization. In terms of its scale, standard, authority and value, China Internet Conference has become a biggest communication and cooperation conference in China. The China Internet Conference was expected to develop as an Asia-Pacific international Internet conference.
